Antônio Rogério Nogueira: 'I think it’s going to be the last one'

Braziliaanse MMA-legende Antônio Rogério 'Minotouro' Nogueira stapt dit weekend hoogstwaarschijnlijk voor de laatste keer de kooi in. Hij treft voormalig UFC-kampioen Maurício 'Shogun' Rua voor de derde keer in zijn MMA-carrière.

De 44-jarige Antônio Rogério Nogueira is klaar om zijn MMA-handschoenen op te bergen na zijn Co-Main Event gevecht met Shogun. Tijdens een UFC on ESPN 14 media scrum laat Minotouro weten dat hij de afgelopen jaren moeite had om vaker dan één keer te vechten.

“My plan is to make a good fight, step-by-step'', zegt Minotouro. “But I think it’s a good time to stop now. I think it’s going to be the last one.”

“I have a lot of kids, a lot of work to do outside the cage'', vervolgt Nogueira. “In my last three years, it was very difficult to train because I had a herniated disc. I had to cancel a lot of fights. Every year I fought one time, then the second one I would have to cancel. It was difficult for me my last three years.”

Derde poging
Minotouro vocht al twee keer tegen Rua en trok beide keren aan het kortste eind. In 2005 kwamen de heren elkaar tegen in de PRIDE World Grand Prix kwartfinale. Tien jaar later werd het gevecht overgedaan als Main Event op een UFC Brazilië evenement.

“It’s a very special moment for me. I’m going to fight with Mauricio for the third time. We made one of the best fights in PRIDE, where everybody talks about this fight. We’re going to try to do our best to make a good impression like we did before in 2005. I thought in 2015 we made a very good fight, too. I think we have a good chance now to steal the show.”
